Epic Thirty-Two: Falsfire's Folly

This is my report for Realms Beyond Civilization Epic Thirty-Two. For the full details on this game visit Realms Beyond Civilization Epic 32.

Since this game's subtitle is "What the #$#@ happened to the resources?", I pause to do a little metagaming. Let's see, Sirian let us know that the Gallic's will continue to be around until the guerilla upgrade. I bet there will be iron, and no horses. That's all I will venture to guess at the moment--not sure what he will do with coal/rubber/oil, but I am fairly confident that there will be no horses.

Of Cold Wine and Hilly Forests

Interesting start. Looks like we will have to do with hunting stags and keeping warm with spirits from the local vineyards. The worker heads North to road the nearest game square, and spots another game. After a little debate, I move the settler northeast to save the hill and to redeem the bare tundra tile, remaining on the freshwater lake. Entremoot is founded in 3950. Worker starts his long roading projects--looks like that will be the key until a better form of government. First build is warrior, with research set to pottery at max.

Entremoot produces the Celts' first warrior in 3750BC; he starts exploring away from the hut until the second warrior completes--hut gives nothing when popped on border expansion. A second hut popped in 3200BC spawns Cletus and two of his slack-jawed yokel ilk. The warriors continue exploring, and the worker completes a road to the wines timed perfectly with Entremoot's expansion to size 3. Pottery is learned in 3050BC, research set to the wheel on min science, even though I suspect that there are no horses in this world. The great hall of food storage completes in 2800BC, and Entremoot begins the age of settling this lonely rock, since our scouts have revealed no neighbors.

The wheel comes in on minimum, and as expected, no horses on this rock--we will have to wait and see about the rest of the world. I have some fun with Cletus and his band between 2670-2630, when three yokels attack my warrior on a mountain and lose! Hey! I thought this was PTW, not CivIII1.29? A real anxious moment happens near the turn of the milennium, when Cletus puts his eyes on my settler.

Good thing I protected my second settler--Cletus' designs are in vain, and--Lugdunum gets founded in 2030BC. The settling of the Keltoi rock continues with Camulodunum in 1575BC, Richborough in 1275BC, Verulamium in 1125BC, Gergovia in 825BC, Augustodurum in 800BC, and Agedincum in 550BC. On the technology fronts, I start speeding up research up the ironworking chain, netting bronzeworking in 1175BC and ironworking in 900BC. Yes there is a WHOLE LOT OF IRON!!! Mapmaking is finally learned in 350BC--established coastal cities' production is switched to galleys. The first galley completes in 330BC and is promptly loaded with gallics for exploration. Eboricum founded 290BC to the western island. Burdigala to the east. This gets us the forbidden palace message. Carthage completes the lighthouse that same turn. Here is a view our world circa 250BC.

And finally, we get to talk to some new friends.

For the next few decades, we learn of two new civilizations, America (we met them) and Babylon (Carthage sold our contact). The first trade presents itself in 170 BC. America knows the Aztecs (who we do not know), but not Carthage or Babylon. So, our maps, 8g and contact with Carthage gets me Philosophy from America. Carthage will not give up anything serious for Philosophy @ 3rd--which means they must be close. So, contact with the Americans, WM, 5gpt, and 9g for HBR, CoL, and mathematics. Carthage has currency. My contacts are traded around, and I now know the Zulu and the Aztecs. Everyone is up some tech on me, and the Americans are in the Middle Ages. I would really like to save the golden age for Republic, but it seems to me that it is time to take the gallics to war, before America builds up too many pikes. We end the time last milennium BC with the founding of Lapurdum in 130BC and one last broker to enter the middle ages: worldmap, 18gpt, and 90g to Carthage for construction. Construction, 5gpt, worldmap, and 5g for currency from Babylon.
